Now in the 26th year, the citrus sale offers Florida naval oranges, pink grapefruit and Georgia Elliott pecans, fresh from the South.

“For Italian Americans, it is very common to have fruit in the home right around Christmas time,” said Matt Libien, the past president of the Fort Lee Rotary Club and chairman of the sale.

The event was originally conducted by a physician before he retired and moved to Maryland. Now H&S Citrus Inc. shares goods with multiple rotary clubs around the country for the first Friday in December.

“The fruit is out of this world. It’s only been picked within that week,” Liebien said.

“We’re fortunate to have two people who buy a thousand dollars of fruit or more or 75 cases of oranges. They donate it to the hungry,” he said. “The Center For Food Action said it is such a treat to have fresh items for their people.”

The order deadline is Tues. Nov. 24.

The community may shop for oranges and grapefruits priced at less than $25 per box, and one-pound bags of pecans appropriate for recipes with cookies, muffins, salads, and pies for under $20.

The organization will have a truck scheduled to deliver goods for pick up Sat. Dec. 6 at Fire House No. 3 on Main Street and Route 46 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Proceeds from the event help a number of causes including Center for Hope and Safety, Fort Lee Little League, HIP, The Center for Food Action, scholarships for borough high school students, the Rotary Youth Leadership Award, disaster relief, and The Bergen Family Center.
